North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), Detroit, MI – BYD, Build Your Dreams, is an Chinese company that has been building batteries for ten years.
BYD calls their car DM, for dual mode. The series parallel hybrid system integrates the benefits of the series and parallel systems.
This video shows BYD’s 20 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack, based on BYD’s own production cells. BYD calls this battery a ferrous battery, based on the chemical nomenclature for iron – FE. The battery pack runs down the center console, and has a lifetime of 2,000 cycles. To recharge the battery to 100% capacity using a household 220 VAC takes about 9 hours.
The battery resembles the battery being produced by A123 battery. General Motors didn’t choose the American made A123 battery group as their partner, instead they choose Korea’s LG Chem.
Remember, this is the company that received approximately $235 million investment from American billionaire Warren Buffett through his MidAmerican Energy Holdings Co..
