Lightweight, agile, and sleek – Miatas proof that going fast in a slow car can be just as much fun as going fast in a fast car.

Introduced in 1989, the Mazda MX-5 Miata was a huge hit. The car was so popular dealers were selling them for as much as $5,000 over MSRP. It wouldn’t surprise me to learn someone out there is still upside down in an ‘89 Miata.

The upscale interior features everything a driver needs and a little more than they thought they needed. Nothing is superfluous in this environment. With that said, the passenger compartment could be a bit more spacious, although it is comfortable nonetheless. The roof, a marvel of engineering, is so easy to raise and lower from the driver’s seat it’s almost laughable.

Power comes from this nicely sculpted 181-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Looking at it is almost as enjoyable as operating it. The free-winding powerplant can be had with a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic to channel its output to the rear wheels.

Lively, responsive, and determined are wonderful descriptors for the way the Miata feels going down the road. The 181-hp engine redlining at 7500 rpm makes all the right sounds; the shifter feels just right as it snicks between ratios, the brakes give you the precise amount of retardation your foot commands and the steering reacts as if it is paired to your cerebral cortex; mind, body, and soul.

On the other hand, practicality does rank rather low in the Miata’s mission statement. This two-seat convertible is a blast to drive on winding roads, or grooving down the straight-away. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more delightful car if you truly enjoy driving.
