2020 VW Golf TSI Review, Pricing, and Specs

2020 Volkswagen Golf TSI 6-speed manual new car review

Ahhh, The Volkswagen Golf GTI is the sportiest member of the pack, and it just landed in my driveway. It has been 45 years since the seventh-generation Golf iconic hatchback debuted in the United States. The VW Golf represents a modern silhouette of great value, sporty handling, roominess, fuel efficiency, and technology.

What is a Volkswagen Golf TSI?

TSI stands for turbocharged stratified injection. The TSI trim is a quality performer, inside and out.

The 2020 Golf packs a 1.4-liter turbocharged direct-injection engine, which makes 147 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The TSI engine is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. EPA-estimated fuel economy for Golf models, when equipped with the six-speed manual is 28/36/31 (city/highway/combined) and 29/35/32 when equipped with the optional eight-speed automatic. I got 33 mpg combined driving.

What’s better, TSI or GTI?

The more affordable turbocharged stratified injection (TSI) was inspired by the Volkswagen TDI Clean Diesel and FSI direct fuel injection engines. The engine allows for higher torque at lower RPMs, which means more power with less fuel usage. Some of the greatest minds in Volkswagen developed these engines, along with TSFI. Sadly, they are no longer at the company, but the engines continue on in legacy.

Enough room for a bicycle

Actually, there is more than enough room for my electric bike that can fold in half. There’s 93.5 cu-ft of interior room, 16.5 cu-ft of cargo space up to the parcel shelf, and 22.8 cu-ft. to the roof. The versatility of the load space is enhanced by a trunk floor that can be moved up or down by 3.9 inches, while the 60:40 split backrest can be folded to give an almost flat cargo area, which accommodates my husband’s full-size bicycle. With the rear seats folded, the Golf has 52.7 cu-ft of cargo capacity.

Amenities like keyless access with push-button start, VW Car-Net Hotspot, and Blind Spot Monitor and Front Assist are standard on the Golf. Car-Net Remote Access gives owners the ability to interact with their vehicle from miles away via the mobile app. It has been part of the Volkswagen family technology since 2014.

2020 Volkswagen Golf competitors

Mazda 3, Audi 3 Sportback, Ford Focus, Ford Focus, BMW 1 Series, and Honda Civic.

The 2020 VW Golf TSI 6-speed manual offers plenty of thrills around the corner. It is fun to drive, functional, gets good gas mileage, and is reasonably priced.
