2022 Volkswagen Taos review, pricing, pictures, and video

Spunky, Sturdy, quiet, and comfortable were the adjectives that Keith Turner, the new carguy for Driving the Nation, used to describe the 2022 Volkswagen Taos, “The most fun I’ve had in a compact crossover in some time.”

Rugged, Bold, Dynamic Exterior

Volkswagen Product planner Mike Stephens walked around the VW Taos, “anyone that has seen a Volkswagen knows this is a Volkswagen.” Stephens showcased the SEL with the top-trim premium headlights with the light strip across the side and that big, bold black glossy grille. The projector LED headlights are the same lights that you will find on the Atlas and Cross sport. Look for the same design element on the VW Arteon and the ID.4.

There are four settings: Onroad, Snow, Offroad, and Custom Offroad. Within the Onroad setting, additional options are Normal, Sport, Comfort, and Individual.

Exterior colors include dust blue, cornflower blue, pyrite silver, King’s red, platinum gray, pure gray, pure white, and black.

Is the Taos replacing the Tiguan?

No, the Taos is not replacing the Tiguan. More likely, it will replace the Golf. Think of the Tiguan as sporty, while the Taos is rugged. The Taos follows in the same rugged design, especially with the Atlas’ squared-off wheel arches. The profile of the compact CUV is more in line with the Tiguan, just a touch smaller and a little easier on the wallet.

Interior – black and french roast

Those people who stop at the coffee drive-thru in the morning will be right at home in the Taos with the black and french roast leather interior.

SEL models feature a standard 10-color LED ambient lighting system. Coordinated with the Driving Mode Selection feature on AWD models, the system provides soothing indirect white light in the Normal profile, red light in the Sport profile, and blue light in the Eco profile. The driver can set any of the ten colors using Manual or Custom mode.

Gray and black two-tone seats are standard on S models. The SE is available in either gray or black. The SEL is available in a two-tone, neutral grey and black or luxurious French Roast and black. Across the trim lines, grey contrast stitching provides an additional visual pop. S models have cloth seats, while SE models feature CloudTex and cloth seating surfaces, and SEL models receive leather seating surfaces.

Who are the competitors of the VW Taos?

The compact crossover CUV/SUV will be compared most closely with the Hyundai Tucson and Subaru Crosstrek.
