AMG CEO Ola Kalenius at 2010 LA auto show

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

Ola Kalenius, CEO of Mercedes-Benz AMG talked to me at the 2010 Los Angeles auto show about the new 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.

The 2011 SLS AMG is a beauty to behold and the flagship of Mercedes’ lineup. The Mercedes-Benz limited-production gullwing coupe is the first-ever car designed and developed from the ground up by Mercedes-AMG, the company’s high-performance division.

What technology has been brought in from the Formula-One racing to help create the SLS AMG?

The new SLS AMG features a lightweight aluminum space-frame body with gullwing doors and a 571-horsepower, 479 lb-ft of torque, dry-sump 6.3-liter, V8 engine. With its front-mid engine and rear-mounted, dual-clutch, seven-speed transaxle, the compelling SLS AMG boasts 14 city/20 highway miles per gallon.

The lean but mean  3,573 pounds, the SLS AMG can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in only 3.7 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 197 mph.

But wait – the car that was shown at the Los Angeles auto show has even better fuel efficiency through technology.

The groundbreaking efficiency is encapsulated in the all-new 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG. The four-door coupe features the all-new AMG V8 bi-turbo engine generating an output of up to 550 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque, as well as the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed Sports Transmission. Fuel economy of 16 mpg city and 21 mpg highway (estimated figures) represents an improvement of up to 33 percent compared with the preceding model. The 2012 CLS63 AMG goes on sale in the US in the summer of 2011.
