Long Beach Transit Board of Directors voted to recommend BYD Motors as the provider of 10 full-electric buses for Long Beach, CA, a city 30 miles south of Los Angeles, CA. On the last day of Governor Brown’s visit to China he announced that BYD buses will be assembled in Lancaster, CA. On May 1, 2013 there will be a grand celebration in Lancaster, CA.
Micheal Austin, Vice President, BYD America, hopes this procurement will lead to more electric bus purchases in the United States, “our bus can run all day on a single charge, and then be charged at night time when charging is the cheapest.”
BYD has exported 11 electric-powered e6 hatchbacks to the United States as part of a pilot program for fleet sales. At the 2013 Shanghai auto show BYD Chairman & CEO Wang Chuanfu unveiled the Qin (pronounced Ching) a plug-in hybrid that gets 118 miles per gallon. It is slated to come to America in 2015.
MidAmerican Energy Holdings Company is a holding company controlled by Berkshire Hathaway. In 2008 MidAmerican Energy Holdings, aka Warren Buffett, bought 9.9% of BYD LTD for $230 million.
