Poschenrieder compares the 3-cylinder to the 4-cylinder BMW 320 engine already out on the road. The horsepower on the 320 is around 178 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque. The 320i gets about 36 mpg. What does the 3-cylinder get?

Why is BMW bringing out the 3-cylinder engine?

The BMW i8 will be unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt auto show. It will be the first Plug-in hybrid electric Vehicle (PHEV) for BMW.
