The three finalists for the 2015 North American Car of the Year are the Ford Mustang, Hyundai Genesis, and Volkswagen Golf. The three finalists for the 2015 North American Truck/Utility of the Year are the Chevrolet Colorado, Ford F-150, and Lincoln MKC.
Ford’s Mustang was the only domestic vehicle in the car segment. In the last 21 years, domestic automakers have won the car category 12 times and foreign automakers have won nine times. Japanese automakers have three wins. European automakers have four wins. Korean automakers (Hyundai) have two wins.
Last years North American Car of the Year was the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray.
The 2015 North American Utility/truck of the Year was where Ford hit pay dirt, pulling in two of the nominations, one for the aluminum Ford F-150 and the other for the Lincoln MKC utility vehicle. The third nominee was the domestic Chevy Colorado.
Domestics have won the truck competition 14 times. Foreign automakers have won seven times. Of the seven wins, Japanese automakers have won four times and Europeans have won three times.
Last years North American Truck/Utility of the Year was the Chevrolet Silverado.
The North American Car Truck of the Year (NACTOY) jurors have been accessing vehicles for 22 years, honoring new benchmarks in the respective automotive segments. The benchmarks include areas ranging from design and safety to innovation and value for the dollar. The vehicles are not compared against each other, but against the segment of the industry they belong in.
Fifty-seven jurors (see below) from newspapers, television and radio stations, magazines and websites voted last week, sending their ballots to Deloitte, which kept the finalists secret until today.
The winners will be announced at the North American International Auto Show on Monday, January 12.
