Orth Hedrick on 2012 Kia Optima hybrid

The Kia Optima is Kia’s first hybrid

Orth Hedrick, Kia Motors of America, took some time to talk to Lou Ann Hammond, CEO,

The Kia Optima is Kia’s first hybrid. Now, Kia has a 2-liter 4-cylinder engine. Where does Kia stand with direct injection and turbocharging?

The new engine goes from 200 horsepower to 274, losing only 2 miles per gallon. How do they do that?

But what about if they were to take a 1-liter 3 cylinder. Wouldn’t that be even better? Could they add a turbocharger to that?

Which cars would get the 1-liter 3-cylinder? What about using lithium-polymer batteries?

What percentage of sales is Kia’s hybrid? Does Kia use CVT?
